Talk:What to look for before trying a BeOS Distro

From Haiku Max Wiki

Notes on content of this page:

1st We address the ATA vs SATA issue. BeOS needs ATA. Zeta 1.1 can be installed on Via Sata, Zeta 1.2 supports most Intel, Via and SIS sata chipsets.

2nd We address the memory issue. BeOS can run on systems with up to 1 GB of memory. If you have up to 2 you will need a boot disk that limits the amount, and if you have more than 2, you will need to physically remove them to run BeOS. Zeta R1 and above on the other hand can run fine with any amount of memory configuration.

3rd USB, if you intend on using USB with BeOS, then you can only use old Pentium motherboars with USB. Newer USB chipsets are not supported. Zeta supports almost all of them.

4th Hard Disk space. Except from the ATA limitation, BeOS can only use a parition up to 80Gigabytes and see up to 137gb of the disk space. Zeta R1 and above doesn't have that limit.

Vasper, I dispute that fact. I have written an entire article about the hdd limit. I had ordered a 250GB hdd to try with BeOS and it could see up to 137GB. Please read my article. http://www.xs4all.nl/~pmlans/studio-33/html/articles/Journey_from_24_to_48_bit_LBA.html Mr.X

Yes, but a usuable parition can only go up to 80Gb on BeOS 5. I have corrected the statement. Vasper 03:54, 19 Jul 2006 (EDT)
